Case Study
Two Guns, Arizona
Historic Structure Documentation
The Objective
As part of a personal heritage documentation effort, we conducted LiDAR scanning of the historic Round House located in the ghost town of Two Guns, Arizona.
In this self-motivated adventure our goal was to digitally capture the immersive qualities of the site using a comprehensive architectural documentation workflow that included terrestrial scanning and as-found modeling of the ruins.
About The Round House
The Round House is one of the remaining stone structures at the ghost town of Two Guns, Arizona, once a lively stop along historic Route 66. Built in the mid-20th century, likely as a residence or utility building, the circular stone design reflects the rustic charm of roadside architecture from that era. It stood near tourist attractions like a zoo and the infamous Apache Death Cave, all part of a roadside complex that peaked in the 1920s–60s before being abandoned in the following decades.
Its design reflects the practical, hand-built architecture typical of mid-20th century roadside stops, constructed with local stone and likely serving as a caretaker’s residence or utility building, rather than a showpiece.
Our Approach
- Conducted a terrestrial LiDAR scan to digitally record the geometry of the stone structure and its surrounding terrain
- Developed high-resolution 3D surface models and architectural documentation from the scan data
- Interpreted and annotated the spatial characteristics and historical context of the site through visual storytelling and immersive tools
Results
Using LiDAR scanning technology, we captured the unique stone architecture and surrounding landscape with precision. The result is a detailed 3D surface model of the iconic Round House at Two Guns, Arizona. The project includes ready-to-execute architectural drawings of the building’s as-found condition, along with an interactive 3D model, helping preserve and share this forgotten piece of Route 66 history.
Developed an interactive online viewer to allow public exploration of the site
Created a precise 3D surface model using LiDAR data
Preserved a forgotten chapter of Route 66 history in digital form
